Transfer a domain without website or email downtime Print

  • 0

A registrar transfer changes who manages the registration. It does not need to change hosting or DNS. Prepare before requesting the transfer.

Steps

  1. Confirm that the registrant email works, the domain is eligible for transfer and there is no unresolved ownership or payment issue.
  2. At the current registrar, unlock the domain and request its authorization or EPP code. Keep the code private.
  3. Record the current nameservers and important DNS records. Do not change nameservers during the transfer unless a hosting move is also carefully planned.
  4. Start the transfer from the client area, enter the domain and authorization code, and pay the transfer invoice if one is created.
  5. Approve confirmation messages sent by the registries or registrars. Keep the old hosting and email active until the transfer is complete and all services have been tested.

Verify the result

The client area should show the domain under your account after completion. Verify its expiry date, nameservers, website, inbound mail and outbound mail.

Important: Some country-code domains use a registry process instead of an EPP code. Never cancel the domain at the old registrar before a successful transfer.
